Aestheticians Let’s Talk: A Reminder That You Belong in This Industry
Imposter syndrome is something almost every aesthetician experiences at some point—especially in the beginning. You might find yourself questioning your skills, feeling like you’re not “qualified enough,” or comparing yourself to more experienced professionals on social media. It can be overwhelming, and if you’re not careful, it can hold you back from growing your business and stepping into your full potential.
But here’s the truth: You don’t have to know everything to be a great aesthetician. No one starts out as an expert, and even the most seasoned professionals are constantly learning. Someone once said to me that to be an “expert” you only need to know 10% more than your audience. That really stuck with me, because I know my fellow aestheticians are ahead by way more than 10% when it comes to their knowledge and expertise! Your clients aren’t looking for perfection—they’re looking for someone who listens, educates them, and helps them feel confident in their skin.
Ways to Overcome Imposter Syndrome:
1. Acknowledge It, But Don’t Let It Control You
Feeling self-doubt doesn’t mean you’re not good at what you do—it just means you care. Recognize those feelings, but don’t let them dictate your actions.
2. Focus on Your Clients, Not Comparison.
Social media can make you feel like everyone else is more successful, but you don’t see their struggles behind the scenes. Instead of comparing yourself, focus on giving your clients the best experience possible.
3. Keep Learning, But Don’t Wait Until You “Feel Ready”.
Education is important, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking you need one more certification before you can be successful. You learn the most by doing—so trust that your knowledge is enough to start, and keep building from there. Remember: “ready” is not a feeling, it’s a decision.
4. Celebrate Small Wins.
Every happy client, every rebooked appointment, every breakthrough moment counts. Keep track of your successes and remind yourself of how far you’ve come.
5. Find a Supportive Community.
Surround yourself with other aestheticians who uplift and encourage you. Having mentors or peers who understand your struggles can make a huge difference.
6. Remember That Confidence Comes from Action.
You don’t magically wake up one day feeling confident—it grows through experience. The more you put yourself out there, the more capable you’ll feel.
In this industry, aestheticians face scrutiny from all sides—clients who question our expertise, social media influencers who push unrealistic beauty standards, and even other professionals who have strong (and sometimes conflicting) opinions on treatments, techniques, and products. It can be overwhelming and further fuel self-doubt, especially for those just starting out. Remember, this is your show, and not everyone get’s a microphone!
But here’s the truth: There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to being a great aesthetician. What works for one professional may not align with your philosophy, your skill set, or the needs of your clientele—and that’s okay. The most successful aestheticians are the ones who stay true to their values, trust their instincts, and build their business in a way that feels authentic to them.
You don’t have to chase every trend, defend your approach to everyone, or change what’s working just because someone else does things differently. The right clients—and the right professional community—will respect you for your knowledge, your integrity, and the results you provide. Stay focused on your expertise, keep learning, and trust that your way of doing things is enough.
At the end of the day, imposter syndrome is just a sign that you’re stepping outside your comfort zone—which is incredibly brave and that’s where growth happens. Trust yourself, trust your skills, and know that you belong in this industry.
